Maybe you forgot to click on apply?

Go to Control panel

click on Mouse

then choose the Pointers tab

Then click on the Normal Select (should be top entry in window)

Then click on browse and select the pointer you want.

Once that is done make sure you click on APPLY before you click OK

Should work, it works for meHow to change a custom mouse cursor to default?
Right click on the desktop and go to properties and if you're running vista then you should see it in the land-hand side see some mouse options
